I.FORUM BACKGROUND
In December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation and designating March 21 of each year, starting from 2025, as World Glacier Day. As a contribution to these initiatives, the Northwest Institute for Eco-Environment and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Dagu Glacier Administration Bureau of Sichuan Province, is hosting the “Dagu Glacier Forum for the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation 2025”, scheduled from March 15 to 18, 2025.
In 2024, Rice University, the University of Iceland, the Icelandic Glacier Society, the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS), and UNESCO launched the Global Glacier Casualty List (GGCL) project (https://glaciercasualtylist.rice.edu/?page=Page). This project highlights 18 renowned glaciers worldwide, chosen due to their impending disappearance and their significant scientific and economic value, to raise awareness on the drastic changes glaciers are undergoing and the urgency of their preservation. Dagu Glacier is the only glacier from China included in the GGCL.
At the initiative of the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS) and the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS), the Dagu Glacier Forum, held at the Dagu Glacier Park along with glacier preservation public activities, aims to bring together experts, scholars, and policymakers from relevant institutions both domestically and internationally. This forum will focus on the topics such as glacier and climate changes and adaptation, glacier preservation and international cooperation, water resource changes and sustainable development in central Asia, and glacier-related hazards.
